What a treat it is to come across a spot like Cofton Park, near Dawlish in Devon . Plus, once they’ve all departed, you’ll have a lot more money . Then you acquire a puppy, and you’re back to square one. Worse, because flying travel is out of the question . And for some inexplicable reason, more vacation destinations prohibit pets rather than children . So it’s a pleasure to stumble upon a place like Cofton Park near Dawlish in Devon .
It does, after all, accept children, but let’s not hold that against it . More significantly, it truly welcomes dogs . First and foremost, it’s a massive complex with everything from luxury hot-tub cottages to camping sites and everything in between .
So there’s something for everyone’s budget. . The fishing lakes are another unique feature that draws avid fisherman back year after year . The holiday had begun the instant we arrived . Checked in effortlessly, and proceeded to our hot-tub cabin (I’m far too comfort-seeking to camp under canvas) .
It has a dog exercise area
Bubble, our difficult-to-please hound, went directly to the dog bed to eat his snacks and have a snooze before we investigated the nearby dog exercise area . Devon should go. Starting the vacation
. After our five-hour car ride from home in Yorkshire, he was able to stretch his legs and run about in a safe but steeply sloped field. Then, when my equally difficult-to-impress wife went into the walk-in closet to unload, I had to make friends with the hot tub, thankfully. We were there outside of high season, so the place was relatively quiet . The chippy was unfortunately closed. However, the restaurant and well-stocked shop were all open .
The employees there suggested they could arrange for the fishing equipment shop to remain open for a short time if required. Our lodge neighbour, a safe distance away, was a man who had been coming to the place for 14 years.
Every day, he would leave his wife
in the hot tub while he went out for hours in quest of the “huge” fish in the
lakes we could see from our windows.
He was after one of the new carp released in November, measuring 30lb 8oz. He
hadn’t caught one yet when we chatted . But he was still hopeful . There are
five well-stocked lakes, each with its own set of difficulties and rewards . It
including carp, tench, roach, rudd, bream, and perch.
I’m amazed there weren’t more herons about. His wife seems unconcerned about the plans and, I must admit that the allure of lounging lakeside with the temperature hovering around double digits pales in comparison to an al fresco shiraz and bath.
The description of Devon
The estate is bordered by beautiful walking country . And our favourite trip was via the private woods just off site (which is Now open to tourists to Cofton Park) . Which eventually leads down to Dawlish Warren and its magnificent beach. I use the word “down” with care. There is a serious incline — and don’t forget that you must return UP to the spot. .
The park is an excellent starting point for sampling Devon’s delectable cuisine. We travelled out to Torbay . Which is home to the picturesque villages of Paignton, Basil Fawlty’s Torquay, and Brixham, a historic fishing port .
The English Riviera is an unique geographical area of the United Kingdom . Best enjoyed out of season, when there is room to walk, time to stop and watch, and there is no need to queue for a cream tea or a pint. .
But my favourite spot is almost on your doorstep at Cofton Park. It’s Dawlish, a peaceful, delightfully unusual beach town known for its black swans, which frightened Bubble. and the beachfront railway Despite this, it can nevertheless give conventional treats such as the greatest fish and chips , we’d had in decades (and we’ve had a lot) . And delicious ice cream laced with fresh Devon cream .
